Testing new pesticide products or new formulations under field conditions is a major step that is needed to make recommendations for their use in prevention and control of malaria before products can be taken to market. It allow such products to be assessed under natural conditions (e.g different substrates, temperature and humidity) as well as testing their acceptability to local populations. The Tanzanian National Malaria Control Program National Malaria Strategic plan 2014-2020 will continue with indoor residual spraying (IRS) in focal arears with seasonal malaria transmission to pre-empt malaria epidemics; and areas with high levels of insecticide resistance. Mapping of local transmission patterns and potential will allow more targeted and focal spraying in these areas. Currently IRS is implemented with ICON CS (Syngenta Crop Protection AG, Switzerland) in selected areas in 18 districts of three regions of lake zone ( Kagera, Mara, and Mwanza) IRS operations will be scaled up in selected focal areas in 43 districts, based on the following criteria: (1) identified holo-and hyper-endemicity areas with perennial transmission and resilient to changes; (2) moderate and high prevalence areas with seasonal transmission; (3) areas with high level of insecticide resistance (especially pyrethroids); (4) areas with increased risk of epidemics, and (5) FOCAL AREAs in the lake zone where IRS has historically been implemented. Using malaria risk map it has become possible to locate the target areas more accurately so that IRS operations can be more focused and precise. The proposed IRS scale up entails a geographical expansion, with increase in target areas. However the total number of households sprayed will remain similar to the current levels (i.e, approximately 14% of households in mainland Tanzania). Objective 1 To evaluate efficacy of K-Othrine Polyzone SC-PE 62, 5 at 20 and 25 mg AI/m2 and compare it with K-Othrine WG250 at 20 mg/m2 on the most common indoor surface against the malaria vector, Anopheles arabiensis Objectives 2 To determine residual activity of the two formulations against malaria vector, An. arabiensis, over a time period of 12 months.
